#319/#36 The Muppets
Muppet Walter, his human brother Gary (Jason Segel) and Gary’s girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) all embark on an adventure to reunited the muppets, after they disbanded years ago, before the muppet theatre is torn down by a greedy business man (Chris Cooper) for the oil beneath.
Finally the muppets came out over in the UK (4 months after the US release date (which I think is bullshit given that there would have been no muppet show had not the BBC produced it when none of the US networks would pick it up) and it was awesome to see all my old favourites back on the big screen again.
Segel, Adams and Cooper all do a good job in their individual roles, even if they are all a little cartoony, but it’s the muppets you watch this for and they don’t disappoint. It’s not even just the main cast that are here but all the great secondary characters like the Link Hogthrob and Dr Strangpork from the Pigs in Space sketches, Sam the eagle, Zoot the saxophone player, Rowlf the dog, Sweetums etc as well. It really made it clear that those involved were big fans of the original show and not just trying to make a quick buck like a lot of the more recent muppet tv specials did.
It’s also a really funny film, making me laugh out loud more than once in the theatre, and full of great tongue-in-cheek 4th wall breaking jokes. The story, although a little recycled at this point, was fine and the celebrity cameos worked in the way the original 2 films cameos also worked. Great soundtrack as well.
All in all an entertaining watch and a great addition to the muppet legacy. I intend to add it to my collection when it comes out on DVD and if you haven’t already checked it out then give it a go. 4/5
